would like to point out that this image has the intentions of showcasing the newest additions to the princess line up, so all the older princesses of course aren’t the center of attention.

of course, the placement of certain princesses could be better, but also consider this was probably purely unintentional. or in better words, not a conscious thing. 

oh believe me, it is completely possible for racism to be subconscious.

I think it’s fairly obvious that the racial problems would be ammeliorated if they HAD arranged by sequence. That means Mulan would be in front of Snow White- Rapunzel and Jasmine would be in front of Sleeping Beauty AND Ariel- and Tiana would make her way to the front, past Cinderella and Belle.

I mean honestly it’s sort of laughable to look at this and decide that it’s arranged to display newer in the front, and older in the back. It’s actually only relevant to the frontmost two characters and no one else. So might want to come up with a better reason to justify racialized placement if you are really dead set against calling it out, since it’s harmful whether or not it’s “intentional.”

Especially since that’s really a consciousness in and of itself. People who care about this stuff consult others and listen to what they say. Very easily, anyone with an iota of understanding of what usual critiques against the princesses are, would have noticed that.

If they wanted to show case the newer princesses better I would say that they should have done it by release dates. The newer ones in the front and the classics at the back. The front three princesses would be Merida in the front because she is the last princess, with  Rapunzel and Tiana, by her side. Beside Rapunzel should be beside Pocahontas and beside Tiana would be beside Mulan. Jasmine and Belle behind Mulan and Pocahontas. Ariel and Aurora behind them and with Cinderella and Snow White in the back.

All of that, but I am also kind of offended that their character designs have been altered so they almost all have sexy bed hair. Just… was that REALLY necessary, Disney?

“I suddenly recalled a moment in the university library when, looking for a book, I had turned my head sideways as I walked down the stacks and thought how spectacular it would be if all the titles formed an accidental sentence when read one after the other in a long chain. Standing amidst the bookshelves in Half Moon Bay, my next move was simply to make this imaginary accident real. I spent days shifting and arranging books, composing them so that their titles formed short sentences. The exercise was intimate, like a form of portraiture, and it felt important that the books I selected should function as a cross section of the larger collection.”

The sentiment is lovely, but I would damn well kick someone’s ass if they every fucked up the order of books in a library where I was trying to find books.

That’s awesome if she explains what she wants and gets permission to pull out larger numbers of books to take them home and try to work this out, but if she’s doing it IN the library without any thought to the people that work there, then what she’s really doing is making someone work longer hours and possibly getting them in trouble, which could lead to them losing their jobs.

Cute idea. Asshole execution.

Y’all read the link. Some were done in private collections, some in public libraries. The artist and participants obtained permission first. Many of the ones done in public libraries were displayed by the libraries themselves. It appears to all be done with the consent and approval of all involved.

Also, super charming that all a woman has to do is something that looks even a little bit like it might temporarily inconvenience other people while creating art in order to be labeled an asshole who deserves to get her ass kicked.
